Documental: La revolución de personas con discapacidad

La mayoría de veces las luchas sociales parten de eventos espontáneos, cuyos autores son personas sin ínfulas de protagonismo.

Algo así a lo que sucedió a Rosa Parks en EE. UU., una afroamericana que se sentó equivocadamente en un asiento de bus para blancos en 1955, pero sabiendo su error y harta de la discriminación, se negó a quitarse y fue encarcelada; esto motivó a un pastor bautista llamado Martin Luther King a iniciar protestas contra la segregación en los buses y el resto es historia.

Muchos luchadores por los derechos civiles no son eso que pintan hoy los de la “corrección política”, seres acartonados que un buen día les “nació la conciencia” y decidieron ser súper personas, inspiradoras, santas y de retocada imagen snob.

Crip Camp

Ganador del premio del público al mejor documental estadounidense en el Festival de Sundance, la compañía Higher Ground nos presenta el documental “Crip Camp: A Disabled Revolution”, una producción realizada entre Netflix y el matrimonio Michelle y Barack Obama; la historia nos adentra en el inicio espontaneo de la lucha por los derechos de las personas con discapacidad en Estados Unidos.

Alternando las grabaciones históricas y entrevistas actuales con los protagonistas aún con vida, la obra de Lebrecht y Newnham recuerda, sin excederse en el victimismo, las decisivas etapas y deciciones de una lucha que todavía hoy no ha terminado.

Crip Camp

A inicio de los 70´s, en el apogeo de la generación hippie, se realiza el campamento Camp Jened (su verdadero nombre) para personas con discapacidad, cuyo personal e invitados viven intensamente sin importar la condición de cada uno, situación que abre los ojos de algunos, experimentando muchas cosas que en su vida diaria, o no podían, o les eran negadas.

«Jened era una oportunidad para hacer cosas diferentes», dice, en un momento de la cinta, Larry Allison, director de aquel campamento.

«Intentamos promover ahí un ambiente en el que los adolescentes pudieran ser adolescentes sin todas las etiquetas y estereotipos, lo cual fue un producto de esa era gracias a la experimentación social. Nos dimos cuenta de que el problema no venía de las personas con discapacidades sino de quienes no tenían discapacidad. Era nuestro problema así que nosotros debíamos cambiar», añade.

«Crip Camp» nos lleva a 1971 a un lugar situado muy cerca de donde se celebró dos años antes el hito hippie de Woodstock, en la que jóvenes con discapacidad podían ser simplemente adolescentes y olvidarse de la marginación o abusos que sufrían en sus escuelas, barrios y sus propias casas.

Creo que esto no se hubiese realizado sin la filosofía hippie, aquellos melenudos idealistas humanitarios que entre otras cosas pregonaban hacer el amor y no la guerra al compás del rock y la moda psicodélica, cosas que no solo decían sino practicaban, creando para la historia momentos utópicos como el del documental.

«Con quince años, me atraía la gente que fumaba cigarros y que escuchaba música», explica Lebrecht, quien nació con espina bífida y que, además de codirector de «Crip Camp», es uno de sus protagonistas.

Lo grabado en el campamento por el colectivo People’s Video Theater, es un documento excepcional pues muestra las actividades que se realizaban, lo espontaneo de la convivencia entre personas con diversas discapacidades, sus juegos, debates, sus chistes, y hasta sus primeras experiencias sexuales. Lo anterior aun hoy espanta a muchos, puesto que se mitifica a una persona con discapacidad, cundo la única diferencia es la condición de vida.

«En Jened éramos hermanos y hermanas», resumió Joe O’Conor, uno de los hippies que hicieron posible ese campamento.

«Crip Camp» fue la semilla que se necesitó para comenzar protestas contra la segregación de las personas con discapacidad, ahí inició esa fuerza de solidaridad necesaria para huelgas de hambre, tapar el tráfico y tomar edificios, esto a pesar de no ver, no escuchar o no moverse; uniéndose otros activistas de la época como los veteranos de Vietnam o los Panteras Negras, para que sus derechos se respetaran a través de la Sección 504 de la Ley de Rehabilitación de 1973 y, finalmente, con la vigente Americans with Disabilities Act de 1990, conocida coloquialmente como ADA. Esto me hace pensar que quizá aquí en donde muchas luchas de personas con discapacidad han fracasado en América Latina, comenzando por el malsano protagonismo, lideres eternos, y la cartonización de la imagen, ahora políticamente correcta y burocrática; por ello a la hora de convocatorias, todos jalan para su lado.

Iba a seguir desahogándome pero cómo que me salgo del tema jaja, lo cierto es que «Crip Camp» es un fabuloso documento histórico a la autenticidad, hermandad, los derechos humanos y amor al prójimo, algo que tuvimos el privilegio de sentir quienes vivimos y crecimos un tiempo en lugares de convivencia, aquello que nos hace pensar primero en el ser humano y después en la estúpida politiquería.
